Have more people died from the Covid vaccine than from Covid itself?

Checked 18 August 2026

We checked

Claim: More people have died from the Covid vaccine than from Covid itself

Summary

No — COVID-19 has confirmed deaths in the millions, while rigorous safety reviews attribute only a small number of deaths to the vaccines (mainly rare clotting and myocarditis cases). Claims to the contrary usually stem from misreading raw VAERS reports, which log any death after vaccination without establishing the vaccine caused it.

Evidence

Claim: More people have died from the Covid vaccine than from Covid itself

No — the evidence is against it

Confirmed global COVID-19 deaths stand at roughly 7.1 million (with excess-mortality estimates running even higher), while rigorous safety reviews by the CDC, FDA and other regulators have found only a small number of deaths causally linked to COVID-19 vaccines, concentrated among rare clotting (TTS) cases tied to the J&J shot and rare myocarditis cases; raw VAERS report counts (tens of thousands of unverified reports) are often mistaken for confirmed vaccine deaths, but VAERS itself states a report only means a death occurred after vaccination, not that the vaccine caused it, and investigators have found the vast majority unrelated.

Origin of claims

May 2021

Fox News host Tucker Carlson told viewers "a total of 3,362 people apparently died after getting the COVID vaccine in the United States", citing unverified VAERS reports as if they proved causation, an early seed of the vaccine-death-toll narrative.

September 2021

A self-published 'Vaccine Death Report' by David Sorenson and Vladimir Zelenko, published by the website Stop World Control, was shared across Facebook, misreading VAERS and EudraVigilance data to claim millions of vaccine deaths.

2022–2023

Figures such as Steve Kirsch escalated the numbers, with one 2023 blog post claiming "COVID-19 vaccines have killed 676,000 Americans", extrapolating from the same unverified reporting system.

November 2023

The outlet People's Voice ran the headline "New Study Reveals Covid mRNA Jabs Killed '3.5X More Americans Than Virus Itself'", giving the claim its now-familiar comparative form; FactCheck.org's SciCheck traced and rebutted it.

January 2024

Podcaster Bret Weinstein told Tucker Carlson that COVID vaccines had killed 17 million people worldwide, echoing the earlier Zelenko report; FactCheck.org labeled the figure false the same month.

The comparison traces back to recurring misuse of passive-surveillance databases — the U.S. VAERS system and the EU's EudraVigilance — which log any reported death after a vaccination without verifying whether the vaccine caused it. That raw, unverified reporting was first amplified into large death-toll claims by broadcasters and self-published reports in 2021, then reformulated in late 2023 into the specific 'more deaths from the vaccine than from COVID itself' framing by a fringe outlet, and has since been recirculated by prominent podcasters and commentators. Social media posts have misused survey data and adverse events reports to falsely claim that COVID-19 vaccines have killed more people than COVID-19.
